CA Earnings: Acquisitions Drive Revenue Growth, Opportunity
Jessica Breen submits:Below is TBR’s commentary on CA Technologies' (CA) 3Q10 results. Security and virtualization management initiatives drove new revenue growth for CA Technologies during the quarter. TBR believes security and virtualization are increasingly critical to the success of IT and will refresh CA’s revenue growth as mainframe revenue remains flat.Security offerings like Identity and Access Management increased in double-digits year-to-year, while Service Assurance increased in triple-digits.Mainframe revenue was down year-to-year as the mix shifted toward distributed systems; however, CA Technologies believes mainframe revenue will pick up in the second half of its fiscal 2011. TBR believes Mainframe 2.0 initiatives will continue to drive some revenue growth in CA’s mainframe business.CA Technologies has set an operation priority on driving new sales through new products, especially in cloud and virtualization management. CA recently released its CA Virtual portfolio and has new customers, including the U.S. Army, adopting its virtualization management solutions.CA Technologies established 100 new market accounts during the quarter as a result of new products, allowing the systems management vendor to be less dependent on the renewal cycle, instead focusing on standalone products that allow it to cross-sell across the entire portfolio.Total revenue during calendar 3Q10 was $1.11 billion, an increase of 3.5% year-to-year.TBR believes CA Technologies will use its operational discipline to streamline expenses across 2011 and return margins to previous levels following acquisitions.Operating income and margin both fell over the quarter as a result of CA’s three acquisitions, but is expected to improve following the integrations of the acquired companies.During the recession in 2009, CA Technologies was reaching operating margins of 31%, which fell across 2010 as it invested in acquiring technologies in cloud, security, and virtualization to support new growth opportunities. These new technologies are now fueling growth for the company.Operating margin fell 400 basis points to 27.7% of total revenue, during calendar 3Q10.As CA Technologies sees reaffirming growth in security and virtualization, it continues to invest in these growth opportunities to maintain growth opportunities in standalone products.Complete Story » seekingalpha.com |
